About Thoughts, Gramercy, Manhattan, November 2020

“City Canvas’’ is a 24-month pilot designed to allow the installation of temporary visual art on eligible sidewalk sheds and construction fences. We’ve worked with local communities to transform protective construction structures into spaces for temporary art installations. This is a partnership with The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs (DCLA), in collaboration with the New York City Department of Buildings (DOB) and the Office of the Mayor.

Julia’s series “Thoughts” – which explores the morphology of varying groups of neurons, formed by overlaying cell bodies, and produced via neuroimaging software. The original series is printed on aluminum at 20” x 16” each.

As the building is being turned into the home of a health care incubator (Deerfield), her work also serves the purpose of an artful public service announcement regarding the forthcoming building occupant.
