Carlos Torres-Machado

Playground, by artist Carlos Torres Machado, is a study of the Brownsville community as observed in their playgrounds. Playgrounds are a community space for kids, teenagers, and adults where people unite, talk, and interact. In the colorful space of Torres Machado’s mural, the rich diversity of people living in the neighborhood come together as one.

Carlos Torres Machado develops critical and documentary processes within his various bodies of work. He inhabits the extremes of rigorous geometry and lyrical abstraction. At both ends, his notion of community, social trends, and public participation are present. He received his BA in Contemporary Arts and Communication from Universidad de las Artes in Buenos Aires, Argentina, and Universidad San Francisco in Quito, Ecuador. The recipient of many awards and residencies, in 2021 he was chosen to participate in the Czong Institute for Contemporary Art’s International Symposium for Visual Culture, in South Korea.
