Viktoriya Basina, Julia Cocuzza, Murals at Domestic Violence Shelters, The Bronx and Queens, 2021

About

This 2021 project was especially meaningful to us, as these two murals were installed at domestic violence shelters. They were created by involving residents in the artist selection and design process. Artists Viktoriya Basina and Julia Cocuzza were chosen by residents from an open call. Viktoriya’s mural is located at a DVS in the Bronx, and Julia’s at one in Queens.
Each artist worked with residents over a series of workshops to create an uplifting design that made residents feel heard and respected. Viktoriya’s work features the Indigenous North American version of the Phoenix as a symbol of rebirth and revival. Julia’s mural incorporates elements created by residents during her workshops. This project was made possible thanks to Douglas and Deborah Brown and Zhiyuan Yang. View on Instagram
