About

Installed on 65 lamp posts in Lower Manhattan during the winter of 2021-22, this exhibition explored the notion of resiliency. The art was selected through a public-design competition organized in collaboration with the Alliance for Downtown New York and brought in over 150 applicants.

The two exhibiting artists – Frances Smith and Michelle Weinberg – were chosen by a panel which included Gary Carrion-Murayari, Curator, New Museum; Lili Chopra, Executive Director, Artistic Programs, Lower Manhattan Cultural Council; and Claire Gilman, Curator, Drawing Center.

Smith’s artworks, entitled “Dances of New York City,” featured a collection of 10 illustrations that celebrated cultural diversity through the portrayal of various dance forms including Soca and Swing. Weinberg’s “Geo Grid” presented patterned art with upward swirling movements visualized through vivid colors and geometric and plant forms.
