Whatever Works!

The Art Production Fund‘s WOW (Works on Whatever) project has just launched a new product: dinner plates, featuring the work of Rudolf Stingel, the same artist who collaborated with the APF back in 2004, covering the floor of Grand Central Stations Vanderbilt Hall with floral carpeting. Read a bit about his latest creation HERE on the New York Times style-forward T Blog. Tres chic!

We at ArtBridge have also been taking our Art off the walls (or in our case, off construction scaffolding) and re-purposing the vinyl upon which our exhibition art was printed into…Tote Bags! Just in time for beach season, eh? We’ll be launching at Etsy store in the coming days where they’ll be available to purchase for a cool $55 but if you’re dying to get your hands on one early, drop me an email: jordana@art-bridge.org. This weekend is supposed to be mighty beach-y…!

What's Happening in Public Art This Week: 4/21

This Wednesday, the 21st, Emerging Leaders of New York Arts will be hosting a Creative Conversation on impact of Public Art called “Public (Art x Space).” I know I’ll be in attendance. All the need-to-know information is below. It promises to be a lively and informative evening.

In recent years, New York City has become a major locus for exploring the role of art in public spaces, art as public space, and the art of public space. These valuable initiatives represent not only a means for engaging and developing vibrant communities, but give us new ways to think about managing the arts. For this Creative Conversation, four local champions in public art practice will share behind-the-scenes cases of projects they have managed; reflecting on motivations, strategies for success, and lessons learned as advocates for dynamic, livable cities.

Panelists:
David Koren, Executive Producer, Figment
Lauren Ross, Curator and Director of Arts Programs, The High Line
Representative from Department of Transportation, Urban Art Program

Moderated by:
Katie Denny, North Brooklyn Public Art Coalition

Wednesday, April 21, 6:30pm
WNYC’s Jerome L. Greene Performance Space
44 Charlton Street (at Varick Street)

The conversation continues after the panel!
9:00 pm at the Dog Ear Tavern, 333 Hudson Street (at Charlton Street) with an ELNYA Happy Hour!

Participate!  $10 suggested cash donation at the door.

Quote of the Day

In their article on the best public art installations of the first ten years of the new millennium, electronicbeats.net, a music and lifestyle website, declares the surge of temporary public art installations around the world to be “the most eye-catching movement that arose in [the last decade].” A validating statement if ever I heard one! Below is a selection of some of their favorite Public Art picks from the trailblazing “Noughties.”

We Like Your Style, LA!

This slipped by us but not by ArtBridge friend, Chris Northrup, who was kind enough to pass along the information this week about a Los Angeles victory for Art in the ongoing Art vs. Advertising battle. Better late than never, I say!

Garish billboards are no stranger to Los Angeles– there’s even a non-profit organization, Ban Billboard Blight, dedicated to protecting the landscape against their takeover– and as the Art Production Fund did with taxi-tops earlier this year in NYC, so did the MAK Center for Art and Architecture with 21 billboards scattered throughout West Hollywood with their How Many Billboards? Art In Stead initiative.

Kimberli Meyer, Director of the MAK Center, feel about billboards as we at ArtBridge feel about blank panel scaffolding. In her words, “Los Angeles public space begs for smart art to break up the monotony of everyday media fare.” Amen. Have a look below at some of the pieces that were part of the campaign. Smart indeed.

We're Excited About…

It’s a Summery day here in the City and with the arrival of the sun and heat has come an idea: a weekly posting highlighting what’s worth knowing about in the Realm of Public Art.

This week for our first entry, I’d like introduce you to a London and NYC-based Public Arts organization called wasted spaces. Their mission? To turn “unloved” and underused buildings into platforms for the work of emerging artists working in a variety of media. I was turned onto them by the Public Art Network website and their particularly of-the-moment project, “Hello Wall“, created by London duo, Pete Hellicar and Joel Gethin Lewis, really caught my eye.

The “Hello Wall” is an interactive installation projected onto the side of a building on Wembley High Road in London that not only fosters street-level appreciation of art, but allows passersby to alter the installation (and therefore, their surroundings) by tweeting commands to the wall’s twitter account, @thehellowall. Want to see circles rather than triangles? Want them to be small rather than large? Just tweet “circles smaller” and watch the installation respond to your command (have a look at the video below to see it in action).

Looking forward to keeping up with wasted spaces and the innovative projects they ‘ll be commissioning for 2010. Check back next week to see what else is making us geek out in the big wide world of Public Art.

The Public Art Network: a Real Gem of a Website

We at ArtBridge are always looking for informative websites about Public Art here in NYC and beyond and thanks to some early morning searching on twitter, have stumbled upon what seems like the definitive site: The Public Art Network. If you haven’t yet had a look, we strongly recommend you do so. What really stands out about the PAN is the expansion of its notion of “Public” into the virtual world. It could be said that people are spending more time and “doing” more in the virtual realm than in spaces firmly rooted in geographical place and time. We’ve been exploring similar questions relating to the public sphere (details to follow) and will be closely following the findings of the Public Art Network (and reposting many of them here for your reading pleasure).

The DOT launches the reNEWable Time Square RFP

Beautifying the City’s many public spaces has been on our minds since the founding of ArtBridge in the Fall of 2008 and we’re happy to know that it’s a top priority for the Department of Transportation, too. Just this week, they released a Request for Proposals for their latest initiative, reNEWable Times Square. Like ArtBridge, they are looking for artists to propose “surface treatments” for public space. The difference? While ArtBridge uses the surface panels of construction sheds that hang above street level as its canvas, reNEWable Times Square seeks to transform the asphalt surfaces beneath our feet.

Visit the reNEWable Times Square page within the Department of Transportation website for more information or download the Request for Proposals directly from the ArtBridge blog by clicking HERE. We look forward to seeing what innovative design scheme is ultimately chosen to be realized at the “Crossroads of the Universe.”

Dick Blick and ArtBridge: a Proud Partnership

We’re very happy to introduce Dick Blick art materials as the first sponsor of ArtBridge! As we’ve been building this organization it’s been consistently important to us to partner with those companies and organizations we respect. Urban Samaritan, the incredible non-for-profit that employs homeless women to design and sew our fabulous tote bags was our first partnership of the year. We are proud to call Dick Blick, an art supply store that opened up shop (and by “shop” we mean kitchen, that’s where it all began- click HERE to read the full story) in 1911 with their first big hit best seller, the lettering pen.

A lot can happen in 100 years and happen it did for Dick Blick- they are now one of largest distributors of art supplies and teaching manuals in the world. And now they can add “ArtBidge Sponsor” to the list of all the neat things they’ve done. We’re tremendously grateful this partnership and with their help, look forward to bringing you many more ArtBridge Installations in the coming year.

Thank You to All Who Attended Last Night's Fundraiser!

Wow, what a wonderful evening! Thank you to all who attended and donated to help us reach our goal for the night of raising $1,000. With your help, we did it and will now be able to apply for the kinds of grants that will help us bring ArtBridge installations to construction sites throughout the city (perhaps even to one near you…!).

If you were unable to make last night’s event but would still like to donate, simply click HERE. If you’d like to keep abreast of ArtBridge news and events, why not join our mailing list? To join, click HERE. Of course, all email addresses we receive will never be sold to third parties or used for anything other than the occasional update about our progress as an organization that, although still in its infancy, plans to leave a big footprint on our City’s urban landscape that is forever undergoing construction and redevelopment.

Questions? Comments? Feedback? Please don’t hesitate to get in touch with me, Jordana, by emailing jordana [at] art-bridge.org.

Once again, thank you for your interest and continued support and we look forward to big things for 2010.

-Jordana, Program Director
