Plywood, Concrete, Paint 2!

When: Thursday, January 20, 2011 from 6-8PM
Where: The Center for Architecture
536 LaGuardia Place, New York, NY

Back by popular demand is the second installment of panel discussion series, “Plywood, Concrete, Paint!”

The first installment of “PCP” focused on the growing relationship between art and construction; it seems that now more than ever, artists and organizations are turning to the construction site, seeing it for the first time as unexplored territory for the making and exhibition of contemporary Public Art. Among the panelists were ArtBridge Founder, Rodney Durso, Public Artist, Maya Barkai, and Joe Covello, President of  United Hoisting and Scaffolding.

For this second discussion, we’ve brought together a new group of experts in the fields of real estate, art, and design to discuss what exactly public art does for public space. How is public art used to turn the city’s many “non-spaces” into destinations? What is the relationship of public art to art housed inside the museum? Beautification is only one of an infinite number of effects art in the public realm can have on public space–what else can it do?

Speakers include:
Laurie Beckelman, Principal at Beckelman + Capolino
Ari Heckman, Principal at HM Ventures
Filip Noterdaeme, Director, Homeless Museum of Art
Nick Yulman, Sound Artist

Moderator: Olympia Kazi, Executive Director of the Van Alen Institute

Note: Photography and videography of the “Plywood, Concrete, Paint!” is prohibited. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Tickets: $15. All proceeds go directly to ArtBridge and to the development of this ongoing, cutting-edge series devoted to exploring the effects, quirks, trends and future of the growing partnership of Development, Construction and Art.
